WASHINGTON, D.C. -- New startling statistics about teen driving could alarm some parents (http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/news-article.aspx?storyid=33306#).
In a special report, USA Today looks at the deadly dangers teens face behind the wheel (http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/news-article.aspx?storyid=33306#).
On average (http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/news-article.aspx?storyid=33306#), 10 teens, ages 16 to 19, die on U.S. roads each day. Most of those accidents happen when a teenager is the driver. USA Today examined all the deadly crashes involving teens in 2003 and found most have common factors.
USA Today reporter Jane O'Donnell says "You really don't want your kid in this classic situation where there are two or there teens in a car they are driving at night they are in the wrong vehicle (http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/news-article.aspx?storyid=33306#). A SUV, Pick Up or small vehicle.. these are not the vehicles inexperienced drivers should be driving."
The analysis also found 16-year olds were the most dangerous drivers. Medical researchers believe that's because at 16, the part of the brain that controls impulsive behavior is not fully developed. Experts agree teens need more supervision from parents.
